Do you sit at a desk for hours on end?  Have to contend with back pain?  Back pain seems to run common among those who work at office jobs.  I’ve been an advocate of yoga for years.  It helps me stay flexible and strong and better able to handle my stress and my back pain issue (which I believe are related).

With yoga (as with any exercise), always be mindful of what your body needs.  Stretching too deeply or before you’re sufficiently warmed up can cause more pain. Start slowly and stretch appropriately (for you, at that time) so you don’t aggravate your condition.  Soft gentle spinal twists can balance the spine and really aid in relieving back pain. Be playful with different yoga back pain exercises and think about how your spine feels. If is feels good it usually is. Your body tells you when something is not right.  Listen to it!

Poses that are particularly helpful for the back:

  • Spinal Twist
  • Triangle Pose
  • Chair Pose
  • Downward Dog
  • Cobra

If you’re not practicing yoga now, there are many websites and books that show you how to do each pose properly.  But, the best way to get a good foundation is to take a class from a certified yoga instructor.

Note: Consult your doctor before starting, especially if you have known disc problems, like hernias or degeneration.
